Moose Festival Set for June 8-10 in Skowhegan
Event includes moose permit lottery, Phil Vassar concert, and world record attempt
SKOWHEGAN, Maine—If you love moose, this is your calling. Main Street Skowhegan has announced plans for the 2018 Moose Festival June 8-10 in Skowhegan. The weekend event will include a wide range of activities for families, including two moose calling competitions, as well as the announcement of results for the state’s moose permit lottery. Organizers are planning on a large turnout to attempt to set the Guinness World Records title for the most people moose calling simultaneously.
The three-day event will include a range of activities for all ages, including adult and child moose calling competitions, hunting and fly-fishing demonstrations, and seminars with sporting experts, plus vendors, outdoor retailers, food trucks, music, and more. The event will be free and open to the public.
At the event, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife will announce the results of Maine’s annual moose permit lottery on Saturday at 2 p.m. In the past, recipients have included Maine residents, as well as winners from Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. The moose permit application deadline is May 15, 2018.
“We are really excited to host the moose festival this year. Skowhegan, along with the entire Kennebec Valley region, has a rich tradition of hunting and other outdoor sports. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors from around the country and expect more than 5,000 to come to the area for the event that will positively impact the local economy,” said Kristina Cannon, executive director of Main Street Skowhegan.
Headlining the entertainment will be national recording artist Phil Vassar and opening act Bryan White, who will perform at a concert on Saturday night. Adults will also have the opportunity to experience wild game and craft beer pairing and tasting as part of the weekend festivities. Tickets for the concert and tasting are an additional cost.
Attractions for children during the weekend include exploratory activities, including a climbing wall, BB-gun range, face painting, antler making, tractor pulls, and a moose calling competition for children 12 and under. Moose Maine-iah monster truck rides will also be available for an additional cost.
As part of the weekend event, the Axe Women Loggers of Maine, who compete nationally in a wide range of timbersports, will perform wood carving and axe cutting demonstrations. There will be opportunities to win raffles for major prizes, including Cabela’s gear and a hand-crafted dog sled, and the opportunity to be part of the Guinness World Records attempt for the most people moose calling simultaneously, which will be held Saturday at 1:45 p.m.
Sunday will include the traditional Maine maple breakfast featuring locally sourced ingredients at Constitution Hall at from 7 to 10 a.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
